Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be a sensitive issue for many people. Many feel embarrassed, or want their privacy protected. This makes sense, because sexual behavior is very private. Those who believe they’ve been exposed to HIV may be particularly concerned about privacy, because there’s an unfortunate social stigma about HIV.

Because of these concerns, many don’t want to visit their general practitioner when they know or suspect that they have an STD. Others simply want to go to an expert who’s up on the latest knowledge in the field of STDs. In these cases, people may choose an STD doctor. These types of doctors practice at clinics called genitourinary medicine, or GUM, clinics. If you believe you have been exposed to HIV, doctors at GUM clinics can discuss your risk with you and get you tested.

Symptoms of STDs

Those who have symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease should seek an STD doctor in Singapore. Possible symptoms include:

• Sores on the genitals or around the anus
• Burning with urination
• Discharge from the vagina or penis
• Swelling or redness of the genitals
• Pain with intercourse
• Pelvic or lower abdominal pain
• Unusual growths on the genitals or around the anus

Screening for STDs

In Singapore, STD screening is recommended for those in higher-risk groups. Because many STDs are asymptomatic in many of those who are infected, you may need testing even if you aren’t having any symptoms like those listed above.

Gonorrhea and chlamydia screening is recommended annually for sexually active women under age 25, and those over 25 with new partners, as well as for men who have sex with men. Syphilis, hepatitis, and HIV screening is recommended for those with risk factors, including men who have sex with men, injection drug users, and those who have unprotected sex with multiple partners.

In some cases, you may have a known exposure to an STD. This could happen if you find out that a sexual partner has an STD. In this case, you’ll be tested for that infection, as well as for others, since it’s common to get more than one infection at a time.

Treatment of STDs

In Singapore, STD doctors can treat most cases of these diseases. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and trichomoniasis are all easily curable with antibiotics. Herpes is not curable, but can be managed with medication. Genital warts and molluscum contagiosum growths can be removed, although the viral infections that cause these growths are not curable.

HIV can be managed with medications. Your HIV doctor can give you information about post-exposure prophylaxis (taking HIV medications after a known exposure to decrease the risk of getting the infection) and long-term treatment of HIV. Although this infection requires taking medications for life, it is possible to live for many decades with the infection under control.
